How We Feel about the Abaya Collection from Dolce & Gabbana

April 19, 2017

When luxury Italian brand Dolce & Gabbana announced a few weeks ago that it will launch its inaugural abaya and hijab collection, the news was met with mixed reviews. Stefano Gabbana, co-founder of D&G, debuted the hashtag #dgabaya on his Instagram page and it garnered quite a stir on social media too. There were some who applauded the brand for taking a step towards embracing diversity and some who scorned it for blatantly commercializing the hijab. And let’s face it, we’ve been seeing a lot of big brands targeting the Muslim market and supporting modest fashion. There’s DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara and the latest to join this trend with its very first hijab-wearing model, H&M. So it comes to no surprise that Dolce & Gabbana’s Abaya collection is the next step for the fashion powerhouse!

And what does Zahara think about this beautiful collection from Dolce & Gabbana? Exactly that; beautiful clothes that can be worn by anyone, regardless of ethnicity, culture or religion. Clothes should not be defined by these standards and everyone, and I do mean everyone, can wear whatever they want. We feel that not only was it one of Dolce & Gabbana’s smartest moves, the brand has also helped to reinforce the notion that you can be both modest and stylish. Well done, Dolce & Gabbana!

The abaya collection debuted on arabia.style.com and  mainly features long, flowy abayas in muted neutrals: black, beige and white. The abayas, worn by a single model adorning a hijab, also subtly features their Spring-Summer 2016 runway collection (daisies, lemons and striking floral details). The clothes are all gorgeously embellished with Dolce & Gabbana’s signature Italian features. So take a look at Dolce & Gabbana’s beautiful Abaya and Hijab Collection and be inspired!
