ZAHARA WARRIOR AISHAH BUANG

April 19, 2017 3 min read

I first came across Aishah Buang last year while trolling YouTube for makeup reviews. And voila! Curls&Mints came up as one of the recommended video channels. Her videography style, cool music choice, as well as her refreshing honesty quickly drew my attention. Even though she’s new to YouTube, she’s experienced in the art of journalling; which is why vlogging seemed like a natural transition. Born and raised in Singapore, Aishah is a self-proclaimed makeup addict who has an obsession with bread. Her bucket list includes working with Glossier in the future and going on a Eurotrip. Read on to find out more this week’s fresh and fierce Zahara Warrior!

Aishah Buang
Our gorgeous Zahara Warrior!

Describe yourself in one sentence.
A jeans and t-shirt kinda girl who has an unhealthy obsession with nude lipsticks.

We love your Instagram aesthetic! Who do you follow on Instagram for inspiration?
I love following beauty and lifestyle accounts. @heyclaire, @aniamilczarczyk, @thatschic, @glossier, @ssssamanthaa, and @lindahallbergs are some of them!

Be authentic, passionate and never be afraid to laugh at yourself.

How did you come up with CURLS&MINTS?
Curls – well, for obvious reasons haha! And oddly enough, I have a constant tick to chew mints all the time so taadahh! I’m just glad the name doesn’t make me cringe, lol!

You can’t go wrong with black and nude.

What inspired you to start your own YouTube channel?
I wanted another creative outlet to express myself besides blogging and after watching Claire Marshall and Casey Neistat for years, I finally took the plunge!

I always remind myself with this quote – ‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind.’

You share your own personal life experiences (the good and bad) on your channel. Why did you choose Youtube as a platform to do so?
I see my YouTube channel as an online diary – sharing bits and pieces of my life and of course, talk about one of my passions – beauty. Growing up, I used to write my thoughts in journals, which transitioned digitally (hello, LiveJournal) and then I discovered beauty blogs. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I loved makeup and writing so I started one – www.curlsandmints.com. And the beauty gurus that I’ve followed started vlogging and it brought back the LiveJournal days but this time, I can do it creatively and in motion. So YouTube seemed to be the perfect fit!

Have you faced any negativity from your followers/the public? If yes, how did you overcome them?
Sometimes I do encounter negativity and I’m not going to lie, it does get to me sometimes but at the end of the day, I always remind myself with this quote – ‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind.’

Please excuse her while she smizes in this shot.

As a Zahara Warrior, what advice do you have for someone hoping to kickstart their own YouTube channel?
Be authentic, passionate and never be afraid to laugh at yourself. And always remember that it’s not about the resources, it’s about being resourceful.

If you could go back in time to 5 years ago, what would you tell your former self?
Don’t rebond your hair. Ever. You will look like a certified caveman when your roots start to grow out.

True beauty is being confident in your own damn skin.

What brings you the greatest joy?
Seeing the people I love happy. And bread. I. Love. Bread.

What’s on your bucket list?
Oh wow, I actually have a list haha! One of the things is to go on an Eurotrip and work with Emily Weiss of Glossier.

Aishah and her enviably long, curly hair!

Any beauty secrets you can share with us?
One of my favourite things to do in the morning is to massage ice cubes gently to the skin because it reduces puffiness and large pores instantly!

Complete this sentence: To me, true beauty is…
Being confident in your own damn skin.
