Syahirah Aqila Azlah, otherwise known as Aqira (or Qira!), is a Creative Technology in Film student hailing from Johor Bahru. This Malaysian native’s love for films (whether making or watching them) is what drove her to create her own YouTube channel in 2014. She cleverly combines her love for films and makeup to put up beauty-related videos; reviews, tutorials and unboxings. It was on YouTube that we came across this talented Zahara Warrior, specifically her Bollywood Makeup video, and couldn’t wait to get to know her. Read on as she spills some beans on her bucket list, her favourite beauty YouTubers, as well as the difficulties she faced starting her very own YouTube channel!
Describe yourself in 3 words.
I’m very hardworking.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Surprised? Ummm…I’m a quiet person. Not the socialising kind, haha.
Share with us what a typical weekday is like for you.
I’ll create a new makeup look or makeup tutorial and film it for my channel. When I’m free, I watch movies at the cinemas!
What inspired you to start your own YouTube channel.
I’m always playing with makeup so I thought to myself, “Why not start my own?” I was always watching Michelle Phan‘s makeup tutorials and she was my inspiration. I wanted to be a Beauty Educator, just like her.
Share with us what were some of the difficulties/setbacks that you faced and how you overcame them.
Oh, there were so many! Haha! As a student, the biggest problem was money. To make quality videos, I needed to buy good camera equipment. I wanted to go for quality, not what’s in trend at that moment. So I just worked hard and did all that I could. Insya Allah, it’ll work out.
Where do you see yourself/your channel in 5 years’ time?
Wow! Maybe I’ll be one of Malaysia’s best beauty gurus and a professional makeup artist. A girl can dream!
As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone hoping to start their own channel?
Set goals for your new channel and that will get you on the right track. Don’t be afraid and don’t think about what others may think about it/you. Just do what feels right for you. Oh, and good luck as you embark on your own YouTube adventure!
Which beauty YouTubers inspire you?
Iluvsarahii, Promise Phan & Melissa Alatorre.
What’s on your bucket list?
I’m currently in the final year of my film degree so insya Allah, I will take up a PhD in film studies in the future. I want to contribute towards the Malaysian film industry.
What is the proudest accomplishment of your life so far?
I had good results for my UPSR, PMR, SPM & Diploma, haha. Most importantly now, I have a YouTube channel with over 10K followers. Alhamdulillah, I’m so grateful!
We love your style! Who are your style icons?
I love unique and avant-garde fashion actually. One of my favourite designers is Alexander McQueen.
Complete this sentence: A beautiful woman is someone who ________.
