We first fell in love with Bash Harry when we stumbled upon her blog earlier this year. Hey Bash, a beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog where you can find her musings, outfit inspirations and makeup tutorials, is both cool and chic. This 18-year-old Bruneian is a self-professed fan of Doctor Who as well as a full-time feminist. When she’s not busy being a feminist, she can be found working with makeup as a freelance makeup and special effects artist. During her free time, she dabbles as a model and makes YouTube videos. Phew, what a busy bee! Read on to find out more about this slightly neurotic (in a cute way) Zahara Warrior!
Give us three words to describe yourself.
Manic, neurotic minimalist. Suits me pretty well.
What quote do you live by?
Love yourself. Love yourself more than the world ever will.
What inspired you to be a makeup artist?
I like to joke it was my crippling low self-esteem and need to feel pretty. That’s only partially true. I stared applying makeup when I was 14-15 years old; that ripe age when puberty hits. Makeup made me feel more confident about my appearance, realizing what I had to make myself happy. And when I apply makeup on others, I see the same look I had years ago; that confidence inside.
How has the experience been thus far?
Tiring but exciting. Being a makeup artist, among other things, has definitely changed my life. I’ve become much more involved in the community, working with amazing characters whom I don’t think I would ever meet if I stayed home.
What projects do you have lined up next?
I’ve been filming more videos lately, which may or may not be as exciting as you think it is. It’s all in the preparation. Other than that, I don’t think I have a strong idea what’s to come; just going with the flow.
What’s next for heybash.com?
I will be studying abroad soon, hopefully. Which means there will be more lifestyle posts, adjusting to life outside Southeast Asia. Who knows what’s next? All I can do is hope it’s exciting.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years‘ time?
Gosh, I don’t even know what I’ll be doing in 2 days‘ time! In 10 years, I’ll be 28, turning 29. I want to assume I’ll have my life together. Finish my education and do something significant with my life. I don’t know what yet, but it will be important.
As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone who wants to pursue a career in beauty?
Never stop learning, never stop asking, never stop doing. Being in constant pursuit of experience and learning from others always helps. Don’t be afraid of criticism and learn from them. In all, learn.
What’s a makeup no-no?
Going overboard with contour. I love a good contour but when it looks like a streak of mud on you cheek, perhaps it’s going too far…literally.
Complete this sentence: To me, beauty is _________.
To me, beauty is relative. Create your own kind of beauty, whether through arts or letters or makeup. Nothing is beautiful until you decide it is beautiful.
