Lully Selb, founded by Nurulhuda (Lully) and Selma Bamadhaj (Selb) in 2015, is slowly becoming a powerful force to be reckoned with in the Muslimah fashion world. With their relatively extensive background in fashion design and graphic art, both designers set out to provide modest wear that is both chic and practical, without compromising the Muslimah dress code. Just back from their showcase at Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition in Qatar after being scouted by SheikhaHub World Islamic Fashion Forum (SWIFF) in Kuala Lumpur, the dynamic duo is busy preparing the launch of their Spring/Summer 2016 collection.

Nurulhuda & Selma: founders of Lully Selb

Give us three words to describe yourself.
Selma: Easy-going, adventurous, chocolate-addict
Lully: Warm, fun, creative

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
: I’m a certified scuba diver! Oh and I tried sky diving!
Lully: I can be out of character and random sometimes! One example is you can find me suddenly dancing in supermarket when a catchy tune is being played! I cannot resist. HAHA!

What inspired you to start your own company?
Selma: I studied fashion and have been wanting to have my own line but ever since I graduated, I was working for the industry and never had the opportunity. I then switched into Art Teaching where I met my partner Lully. She started donning the hijab early last year and prior to that, we had been exchanging ideas and frustrations about the lack of modest wear that suit our personalities for our day-to-day activities. We both left the art company and found ourselves building our new baby – Lully Selb!
Lully: After graduating from Fine Arts, I realized that I actually wanted to pursue Fashion Textiles. Prior to donning the hijab last year, I’ve always wanted to design my own prints on shawls. Doors of opportunities open one after another and alhamdullilah my dream came true.

Where do you see Lully Selb in 10 years’ time?
Lully Selb: Across the globe, insh’Allah. We want to not just create clothes, but also a community of passionate women who support each other. We also want to grow the local modest wear industry here through collaborations and skill sharing.

As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone hoping to start her own company one day?
Selma: Believe in yourself and work REAL hard! As the market gets competitive, instead of competing – collaborate!
Lully: Comparison is the thief of joy. Be authentic. Always remember clearly why you’re chasing what you’re chasing.

We love your Instagram feed! Who do you follow on Instagram to get inspiration?
Selma: Oooh so many… @bedoinstudios @marimekko @randomstylishpeople @fashionary @blairz
Lully: @pantone @thestrategylab @highsnobiety

What is the proudest accomplishment of your life so far?
LullySelb: The birth of Lully Selb! And within 6 months, we have made presence in KL and Doha! Unbelievable, but dreams do come true. Alhamdulillah!

What quote do you live by?
: “When there’s a will, there’s a way.” ” Life is like a wheel, one day you’re up, one day you’re down. Just keep moving forward.
Lully: “Stay humble. Hustle hard.”
