Malaque Mahdaly is no stranger to fame. A former cake artist with her own shop, Gula by MalaQue, she shot to fame when she entered the Singapore Idol 3 competition in 2009. That was where she met her husband Syarif, of now-defunct local hip hop duo SleeQ, and the two fell madly in love. The power couple finally tied the knot in 2014 and on New Year’s Eve this year, welcomed their firstborn, the adorable Selma Malika. Malaque (or as she affectionally calls herself, Mrs of #thesyarifs) also co-owns the popular churros joint, Chulop! By The Syarifs, with her husband. Nowadays, this 27-year-old mummy is busy…well, being a mummy, and can be seen actively documenting every aspect of her daughter’s life on Instagram. Read on to find out who’s in her squad, how motherhood is treating her and her advice for new mothers!

You’ve been a mother for about 7 months now. How’s motherhood treating you?
Motherhood has been amazing. Feels like i just got a new job. My boss is Selma and she’s been such a sweetheart letting me make mistakes and never judging me hahaha! Thus, there is something new to learn every day! I also discovered that I am quite paranoid (only towards her) because like I said, I am an “anything goes” kind of person but as mother, I am no joke. Still hoping the paranoia will get better though.
As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give to new mothers out there?
The best advice that I can give to new moms out there is to be kind to yourself and never compare your journey with anyone else because every motherhood journey is different!
Who’s in your squad?
My lovely husband. He keeps me sane by not forcing me to get back to our business. He volunteers to juggle all work-related stuff that I have to do so that I can focus on taking care of Selma. And alhamdulillah, everything has been working out well for us. He keeps me inspired and motivated daily by being a really wonderful dad to Selma and this has rubbed off to me as it made me wanna be a better parent, if not the best, for Selma.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Always have work-life balance.
