April 19, 2017 3 min read

Malaysian makeup artist Saraswati (better known as @queenofluna) has been consistently blowing up social media with her creative hijab character-inspired makeup looks. Yes, that’s right…her hijab! This mother-of-two has shared hundreds of transformations on her Instagram feed from popular Disney princesses to superhero/villain characters, all using her hijab as a prop. Her fans are clearly lapping it up because she now has over 279,000 Instagram followers! We interviewed this amazing Zahara Warrior (who is a self-proclaimed “comic geek”, “Tolkienite” and “Disnerd”) so check it out below! Saraswati is definitely one name you should look out for in 2016!

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
According to some of my fans, they were surprised when they find out I’m Muslim and a hijabi but does their favourite cartoon/fictional characters saying I’m breaking the stereotype that Muslim women are oppressed. (Although I’m not the only hijabi who does this kind of makeup/cosplay).

I think it’s amazing to know this has the opportunity to educate people. I mean we all know, some people see a hijab and think any number of ludicrous things.

What inspired you to be a makeup artist?
What inspired me, hmm…I went through a bad depression stage in life. I searched for something that could heal me. Something that I’m passionate about. So I decided to play with makeup. In 2008, I did the Joker makeup (from the movie “The Dark Knight”). It was the first character makeup I did. And in 2009, I discovered Promise Tamangon YouTube. I was so inspired by her. So my passion for makeup had grown since then.

How has the experience been so far?
I’m just a self-taught makeup artist. I’ve been doing bridal/engagement/dinner makeup on clients since 2011 to be exact. But I haven’t really had that much experience yet because sometimes I had to reject customers due to the fact that they live far away.

We love your instagram feed and your amazing transformations! What other looks are on your bucket list?
I have a few collaborations coming up with fellow makeup artists. Can’t wait to collaborate with them! I’m also planning to do Deadpool and maybe start a makeup series like I did the Alice in Wonderland series a while back.

What is the proudest accomplishment of your life so far?
The proudest accomplishment I’d say is raising my two beautiful sons by myself. And I’m thankful for my family for always being there for me and my kids.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I really hope I own a bridal shop or something. Haha! That’s my goal, insha Allah.

Who are your style icons?
My style icon would be Amy Lee from Evanescence. I love her dark rocker Gothic chic look.

As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone hoping to be a makeup artist?
Don’t live to please others, never give up and stay true to yourself.

Why not click here to read our previous blog article on our favourite looks from her? And how best to show you her mad skillz (yes, with a z!) but with an exclusive character request for Zahara that Sara has graciously agreed to do; Hayao Miyazaki’s lovable Totoro! We at Zahara love his films as he portrays strong, fiercely independent female protagonists so a big THANK YOU to Sara for the love!
