Describe yourself in 3 words.
Bubbly, spontaneous, romantic.
What’s a typical weekday like for you?
Manage my staff, prepare my to-do-list for the following week, play snapchat videos and sometimes I have makeup sessions too. But most of the time, I’m in meetings and managing my website. Not to forget, spending time with my lovely kids after work.
What inspired you to be a MUA?
Makeup has always been my passion since I was a little girl because I love Art. That’s why I decided to be a MUA. I used to be a medical student and was just a few more steps to becoming a doctor but that wasn’t what I wanted. It wasn’t my passion and I knew that I wouldn’t last long.
Share with us what were some of the difficulties you faced and how you overcame them.
I lost my mother 9 years ago in 2008 due to cancer and it was a very difficult time for me because I was still in medical school. My mom was my best friend and we were very close. Her death affected me so much and I was in a depression. From that day on, I changed. I just stayed at home and didn’t talk to people much. I sought professional treatment and managed to overcome my sadness by accepting that my mom is still here with me even though she’s not physically here. I know that she’s proud of what I have become now.
What I learn from this experience is to think positive and keep myself busy. Although I think about her all the time, I know she’s in a better place. 2 years later, I entered the makeup industry and my experience helped me in my work and penetrating the saturated market of MUAs.
As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone hoping to be a MUA?
You really have to know what you want to do in life. If you really want to be a makeup artist, you need to have a good portfolio of your work so that potential clients can see your skills and techniques. Also, it is really important to maintain your relationships with clients or brands. If you have really good PR, inshaAllah, your job will be secure. Furthermore, you must have discipline and commitment. Avoid being late to work and such.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I see myself as an entrepreneur and having my own makeup brand and makeup academy, inshaAllah.
How’s motherhood treating you?
Motherhood has been an awesome experience because my kids are easy to handle, especially Omar. He’s a happy kid and even though I don’t spend much time with him due to work, I always try my best to love him with all of my heart. Rania is 5 years old now and she is very caring and helpful. She loves her brother a lot. Sometimes, I won’t take up jobs so I can spend time with my children! Omar just turned 1 and has started to walk by himself! I am really excited! My kids are the cutest things ever and they never fail to make my day.
Any tips for new mothers out there?
Even though you have kids, you can still look good. Trust me. Do yourself up quickly before going out so you look presentable. Don’t make your baby an excuse not to look or feel pretty. And, if you’re a working mother or a businesswoman, you need to organise your schedule so you can spend quality time with your kids.
We love your style! Who are your style icons?
OMG, I don’t know! Vivy Yusoff because she dresses with confidence and modesty and has a clean aesthetic.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
People would be suprised to know that I was a tomboy when I was a kid. I used to play sports like handball and netball for my school teams.
