ZAHARA WARRIOR YAYA ADALIA

April 19, 2017 3 min read

If I ask you to think of a Malaysian makeup artist (MUA) who’s up-and-coming and is currently attached to major cosmetic industry player, Urban Decay, you’d be hard pressed to think of anyone except Yaya Adalia. A self-proclaimed “crackhead black hijabi”, this young MUA has done thousands of gorgeous looks, both on herself and her clients. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Yaya has the ability to pull off any celebrity-inspired look (check out her latest Selena Gomez-inspired makeup)! Read on as we chat with this talented and funny makeup addict about love, life and of course, makeup!

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I can cook, because every time I talk about cooking/baking, people be like… “Really? You cook?” HAHA.

Describe yourself in 5 words.
Crazy, hyper, friendly, caring & strong.

What inspired you to be a makeup artist?
I love makeup since I was a little girl. I was always trying to steal my mom’s lipstick/eyeliner and playing around with it. Of course I’d never admit it! A
t the same time, I love drawing. When I was in secondary school, I drew cartoons and portraits. Guess who I drew for my first portrait? (I’ll give you a hint… SRK. HAHA.)

Both was a good combination of talents that I have. But I only pursued it after I quit flying with MAS. I love when people look so confident and happy in their makeup and I’m happy if they’re happy with my work. It’s so satisfying!

Yaya Adalia
Makeup was her first love.

As a Zahara Warrior, what advice would you give someone hoping to be a MUA?
Don’t give up no matter what. It’s not easy to make a name for yourself in the makeup industry nowadays because there are so many talented girls out there. They may be better then you, but that doesn’t make you any less talented. You know what your passion is and you go after what you want. If you’re almost there, why give up?

Any projects you’re working on now?
For now I’m focusing my career at Urban Decay, but not only as an MUA. Shhhh…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
With my own beauty/cosmetics brand and married to a loving husband, with a kid.

We love your bold and contemporary aesthetic. Who are your style icons?  Rihanna, absolutely. You want me to “work” a lap dance on you? HAHA I’m kidding! I’m always joking and my friends hate me for doing that. HAHA.

What’s on your bucket list?
My bucket list is huge. But I do think that I can complete everything on it. I love languages so I want to learn them all. But above all things, I really want to bring my family (and myself) to perform umrah/hajj in Mecca, inshaAllah.

If you could go back in time to 5 years ago, what would you tell your former self? Never miss a prayer and read the Al-Quran every day. Believe in yourself. Don’t chase after a bad boy.

A girl needs her squad.

What item in your closet do you wear the most?
My Monki Oki jeans and of course, my black hijab. What else? HAHA.

Any beauty secrets you can share with us?
Please always clean your face if you wear makeup on that day. Do double or triple cleansing even! Don’t sleep with your makeup, no matter how tired you are! Scrub your face with baking soda at least twice a week. Don’t skip sunblock. Exercise!

Complete this sentence: A beautiful woman is someone who _____.
Hmmm… Actually every woman is beautiful in her own way especially when she has a warm heart and common sense.

Ruffles and dark colours are in.
